ArkLaTex soldier dies in Afghanistan

US military officials say a soldier who was born in Shreveport has been killed while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Richard Vazquez, 28, died on Nov. 13 from injuries he received in an improvised explosive device blast in Lakanai Village, Panjwai province.

Vazquez was assigned to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Eglin Airforce Base in Florida.

Vazquez' awards and decorations include the Purple Heart and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Vazquez is survived by his parents, brother and sister who live in Mansfield.
