Emergency Management Leaders Unveil Preparedness Program

State leaders are rolling out a new program to help Arkansans prepare for disasters. It's called "Smart Prepare" and when the power goes out like it did during the last winter storm, emergency managers want to know how many people may need oxygen tanks, for example, and they're hoping people will put that information online before disaster strikes. 

The state has been pushing SMART911 for months. The online database allows families to fill out important personal information about disabilities or medication to help first responders prepare. 

With Smart Prepare, emergency management will use Smart911 profiles to plan faster, safer responses to large scale disasters.

"We constantly stay busy knowing that this state is an disaster prone area, we need people to be as prepared as possible," says David Maxwell, director of emergency management. 

Together Smart911 and Smart Prepare cost the state roughly $800.000. Arkansas ranks 8th in the nation for presidential emergency declarations.
