Former county tax collector gets 14 days

Former Miller County, Arkansas Tax Collector Melissa Barnes, 45, was sentenced to a 14-day jail sentence,  10 years probation and a $2,500 fine after pleading guilty to theft of property charges and abuse of office by 8th Judicial District South Judge Kirk Johnson.

Barnes was accused of stealing tax receipts and using a Miller County Tax Office credit card to buy personal items. She was arrested the day after Christmas, and resigned from office Jan. 28. She also was placed on 90 days probation for the abuse of office charge, a misdemeanor.
