Stephanie Park has always wanted to live in a downtown setting. With renovations of the Sears building on the corner of Louisiana & Texas in downtown Shreveport underway she wanted to reserve a residential space before they filled up. With the art district, restaurants and entertainment it seemed to be a perfect fit, except for the lack of parking.
"The buildings we have around are amazing and they have so much potential but no one's wanting to spend that money to come to a place where there's nowhere to park," says Park.
The Sears development does not have dedicating parking, meaning tenants will need to rent a space in a parking garage several blocks away or find a spot on the street where spaces are metered during the day.
"It's an economic development issue, we have lost money because of it," says Liz Swaine, Executive Director of the Downtown Development Authority.
Swaine says the lack of parking has cost the downtown area commercial tenants in recent years and more convenient parking needs to be found. An agreement is close between Southern University, the city of Shreveport and developers to build a new parking structure behind the Sears building.
