This is a document you helped us write. From your input
we've come up with NewsChannel Six Viewers' Bill of Rights. It's a list of six
rights we pledge to live by, and one by which you can hold us
accountable.
1. You have a right to know. NewsChannel Six will
ask the tough questions, conduct the investigations necessary and give the
timely information needed to serve the public interest and protect public
safety. The NewsChannel Six journalists will seek the truth and report it in an
ethical manner.
2. You have a right to a balance of positive and
negative stories. NewsChannel Six will go beyond the four C's---car
wrecks, crime, conflict and catastrophes. We will not filter out news that is
often tough to hear, but we will take extra steps to find and report positive or
uplifting stories which reflect the true character of life in our
communities.
3. You have a right to relevant crime
coverage. NewsChannel Six recognizes that an over-emphasis on crime
coverage would harm our community through portraying it in a false, negative
light. We will cover crime in such a way as to provide context, meaning,
perspective and relevance. Before airing any crime story, we will weigh its
newsworthiness with the following questions: - Is there an immediate threat
to public safety? - Is there a threat to children? - Do viewers need to
take action? - Is there a significant community impact? - Is it a crime
prevention effort?
4. You have a right to coverage which addresses
real, relevant issues. NewsChannel Six will provide coverage that gets
back to basics... coverage that is relevant and is free from sensational and
tabloid stories and promotion.
5. You have a right to get your news
from anchors and reporters who are engaged and involved in the
community. NewsChannel Six journalists will take the time to get actively
involved in and really get to know their communities.
6. You have a
right to hold us accountable. NewsChannel Six invites and will respond
to public input and feedback on our newsgathering decisions and philosophies. We
will present and respond to viewer feedback within our newscasts on a regular
basis. We will eagerly and diligently investigate complaints, publicly admit any
mistakes and correct them prominently.
