5 of the most expensive auto repairs

Car repairs can break almost anyone's budget, so it helps to know before you visit the mechanic how much you can expect to pay when you're having a problem with your vehicle.

Five of the most costly auto repairs are:

1. Head Gasket. If you blow a gasket, it can cost north of $2,000 to replace. The part itself is not that pricey, but the labor can be extensive, especially if the damage has spread to other parts of the engine.

2. Suspension. A car's suspension is what keeps passengers from feeling every bump and dip in the road. It is comprised of many different parts, so a complete overhaul of the suspension can run between $2,500 and $3,000.

3. Transmission. If your car's transmission goes, the wheels are unable to turn. The transmission is a complex system that controls the flow of power from the engine to the driveshaft. Replacing a transmission typically costs between $4,000 and $5,000.

4. Hybrid car battery. The batteries that help to power hybrid cars cost upwards of $6,000 to replace. Almost all hybrid car batteries lose their ability to charge over time, so if you own your car for ten years, you can expect this repair in the future.

5. Engine and cylinders. Be prepared. If a mechanic tells you that you have major engine damage, you should expect to pay between $7,000 and $10,000. If the engine breaks down and the cylinders are damaged, you typically need to have the entire engine replaced. At this point, it's usually more cost effective to purchase a new vehicle.
