The American Cancer Society's Mission

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service

How We Accomplish Our Mission

The American Cancer Society is the largest source of private, nonprofit cancer research funds in the United stats, second only to the federal government in total dollars spent. Last year, the American Cancer Society invested over $121 million in research, and since 1946, we have invested more than $3 billion in cancer research. The success of our research program is exemplified by the fact that 42 Nobel Prize winners received grant support from the American Cancer Society early in their careers.

Providing the public with accurate, up-to-date information on cancer is a priority for the American Cancer Society. Information on all aspects of cancer is available through our toll-free information line (800-ACS-2345), Web site (www.cancer .org) and published materials. Additionally, the American Cancer Society continues to make advancements in cancer prevention and early detection through local tobacco advocacy, cancer awareness programs and by working through local schools to educate children.

Cancer is a political, as well as a medical, social, psychological and economic issue. Every day, government policymakers make decisions that affect the lives of more than 8 million cancer survivors, their families, and all potential cancer patients. To impact those decisions positively, the American Cancer Society works at all levels to promote beneficial  policies, laws, and regulations for those affected by cancer.

The American Cancer Society also provides support services to those who are living with cancer. These include programs like Reach to Recovery, the I Can Cope educational series, Look Good ... Feel Better, and the Man to Man prostate cancer education/support program.

Advantages of Working with the American Cancer Society

Taking powerful action against the nation's leading health concern
According to a 2004 Roper survey, cancer is the nation's most important health problem, both nationally and personally, and rightfully so. This year, more than 1.5 million people in the United States will find out that they have cancer, and an estimated 560,000 Americans will die of the disease. By becoming a sponsor of an American Cancer Society program or event, you are helping to find a cure for cancer and reduce the burden this disease has on our community. People will see and know your company as an organization committed to the well being of your customers and your employees.

Joining forces with a trusted brand
The American Cancer Society is one of the most recognized names in the country, boasting 96 percent name recognition. According to a 2002 survey, more than 80 percent of Mid-South residents have a positive image of the American Cancer Society. Association with the American Cancer Society is a competitive advantage for your company, generating a more positive corporate image, improved customer loyalty and increased sales potential.

Gaining valuable community visibility
The community will know that you are associated with  the American Cancer Society. In the days and weeks prior to the event and at the event, you will be recognized as a sponsor as outlined in our sponsorship agreement.

2015 Goals
The American Cancer Society has established ambitious goals to be met by the year 2015 by working through the areas of research, education, advocacy and service. Our 2015 goals are:
  • Reduce cancer deaths by 50 percent
  • Reduce cancer incidence by 25 percent
  • Measurably improve the quality of life of cancer patients
Your support of the American Cancer Society and The Bossier Press-Tribune will help us provide hope to those living with cancer, make progress in cancer research and provide answers about the disease.
