The rally took place this morning on Russell Road in Shreveport.

Organizer Marvin Muhammad says the rally was to empower and inform residents. "We also want compensation in place for the residents that have been ill affected by the toxicity level in that area," he says.

Muhammad believes the landfill never should have been allowed in a residential area and adds landfills have a history of being built poor neighborhoods.

He also says they don't want it just to shut down-- they want it gone.

"A full and total shutdown and ratification of this landfill from the MLK community," he says.

The DEQ ordered the landfill to stop accepting new waste but they are still accepting concrete and wood.
