For one local group, Friday is a day of remembrance.

GET UP, Inc. announced the start of their C.C. Antoine Black History celebration.

They did so by revealing a plaque, signed by President Obama, that honors Antoine's military service.

Also recognized was Antoine's brother and father (Petro Carpentier Antoine and Felix Antoine).

The three represent service in the War of 1812 and the Civil War.

The plaque was given to the great grand-daughter and great great-grandson of C.C. Antoine.

C.C. Antoine was Louisiana's third black Lieutenant Governor.

For the next week, different events will be held to discuss Black History.

Workshops, empowerment conferences and film viewing will be free and held for the public to enjoy.

"The most important thing is giving credit to a pioneer that actually did amazing things for the city that we live in," said GET UP Chairman, Craig Lee. "Our goal is to make our celebration into the world's largest Black History celebration."

The first event is Sunday, February 16th, 2014.

It's a Black History Film Viewing and Discussion in Downtown Shreveport.

From 4pm-9pm at Southern University, the film '12 Years a Slave' will be showing.
