NBC 6 is proud to be your Children's Miracle Network (CMN) telethon station.

Our local CMN hospital, CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier, not only heals broken bones, but also broken spirits.
On Saturday, they hosted a race in Bossier City to raise money and awareness about child abuse and neglect.

The CHRISTUS Health 5K B.U.N.N.Y. Run and Easter Egg Hunt benefits two local organizations dedicated to helping abused and neglected children.
The Cara Center sees 50 clients per month.

"We actually provide the medical procedures for suspected abuse and neglected children.  Children are referred to us from the Department of Children and Family Services, the police department, and other local agencies,” said Alberta Davis, Clinical Supervisor, Cara Center.  “They bring in clients suffering from physical abuse.  It can also be neglect or sexual abuse."

The Gingerbread House saw more than 500 children last year.  The advocacy center helps children through the legal process and provides counseling to help them heal.

“That is what we want for these children, is for them to have a normal life as much as possible. For some it is harder than others,” said Alex Person of The Gingerbread House. “But with our organization and coming to The Gingerbread House, the success rate is very good.”

And a normal activity like an Easter Egg Hunt raises awareness and money to make a normal life possible.

“The money is going to go to support the programming so every child who comes through is going to receive a stuffed animal to comfort them,” said Amy Heron, Executive Director, CHRISTUS Foundation Shreveport-Bossier. “If they need clothes because their clothes are being admitted into evidence; if they need a loving, supportive environment, they’ll find all those things at the Cara Center and the Gingerbread House.”

B.U.N.N.Y Run stands for Believing and Understanding Neglected and iNnocent Youth.  The inaugural fundraiser was so successful, organizers plan to make it an annual event.

Mark your calendar.  The Children’s Miracle Network telethon takes place June 1, 2014 on NBC 6.
