A local school district is forced to declare a public emergency after fire badly damages one of its high schools.

Repairs at Booker T. Washington High School could total more than $200,000. The Caddo Parish School Board held an emergency meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Last week a fire heavily damaged a wing at BTW. The board approved a resolution allowing them to move forward with repairs. There was a holdup only because the damages exceeded the district's contract limit.

Clean up has already started at the school. A timeline hasn't been set on when the repairs will be finished.

The school year starts August 11th, but teachers need to be back in the classroom by the end of the month.
