Standout Student of the Week: Gaybriel Gilliam

SHREVEPORT, La. - Huntington High School senior Gaybriel Gilliam is rising above, not only on the court, but where it really matters.

"School comes before basketball," said Gaybriel. "With no grades, I couldn't play. So, keeping my grades up...that comes first."

A three year starter, Gaybriel made all district this season.

Basketball coach Mack Jones says Gaybriel puts up impressive numbers on the court and in the classroom.

"He also is a great person on and off the court. He [has] great] academics...just a great role model for the kids to look up to."

Although he's not ready to make an announcement yet, Gaybriel's hard work is crossing over to offers to continue his studies while playing in college.

"It feels good to have some offers and options after high school," he said. "God blessed me to play after high school so that's a blessing. All I can say is stay tuned."

His advice to other student athletes is, "Keep working hard. Don't never give up. And, schoolwork comes before basketball every time. Just keep God first and you'll get there...wherever you're trying to go."

In college, Gaybriel is considering a major in sports medicine or business.

Standout students must be in middle or high school and can be nominated by teachers, coaches, mentors or principals.
