Volunteering can make a big difference in the lives of many.

Here at NBC 6 News, we like to recognize those who give a helping hand.

In 2008, Angelia Davis, turned misfortune into fortune.

"I got laid off and I told myself that I couldn't just sit around," said Davis. "I'd been wanting to volunteer for a long time and now I had my chance."

Davis loved playing Bingo, and became a Game Host at Greenwood Lodge, a housing facility for those with disabilities.

"I just love it," said Davis. "It just makes you feel good helping people. It makes me feel good and that's why I do it."

Now 6 years later, and with a full-time job, she's still there every Monday helping players win it big.

"I think it's important to recognize Angelia because you need volunteers to make the program more enjoyable for the residents," said Assistant Site Manager, Paula Williams. "There's one resident here who is illiterate. So Angelia took a lot of time to teach him how to recognize the letters and numbers. Now, he needs very little help."

No one leaves a loser, especially Davis, who says she wins every time she's there.

"You get a really good feeling from volunteering," Davis said. "It brings joy to your heart, so I think everyone should volunteer, at least one day a week."

Which is why this week's Gold Medal Giver is Angelia Davis.

Davis brings prizes and refreshments for all the players, sometimes out of her own pocket.

If you would like to nominate a volunteer as a Gold Medal Giver, you can e-mail NBC 6's Jade Cunningham with the person's name and how they help to
