Not all gold medalists are Olympians.
For the next few weeks, Channel 6 will be honoring those who go the extra mile to help the community.
In our first 'Gold Medal Givers' segment, we spotlight one volunteer at the Volunteers of America of North Louisiana Adult Day Health Center.
About a year ago, Bill Richard began volunteering at the Adult Day Health Center.
"I wanted to be a part of a caregiving environment," said Richard. "It fosters a sense of well being and everyone grows from that."
For 3.5 hours, 3 days a week, he does whatever he can to help.
Most of the time that means having fun.
"I've been involved with playing pool and dominoes as well," Richard said. "We've been having a little tournament."
Bill knows all 151 clients by name, and makes sure he spends time with each throughout the day.
"I enjoy seeing the changes in people and I enjoy the response and the feedback," said Richard.
Supervisor, Yolanda Thomas, knew from the moment Bill walked in, that he'd make a difference at the center.
"His time is just valuable, we can't put a price on what he does," stated Thomas. "He comes in with a big heart, just someone who just cares about everybody."
Richard says he volunteers because he cares, and because each person he helps touches his life in a special way.
"It's been a great opportunity for me to interact with people, get outside my own self and my own concerns and hopefully make a difference," Richard said.
However, people who work closely with Richard say, it's the other way around.
"His giving spirit is what has captured the heart of our clients," said Thomas.
Which is why this week's 'Gold Medal Givers' award goes to volunteer Bill Richard.
