Volunteering is a selfless act that can make a huge difference in anyone's life.
Here at NBC 6 News, we like to honor those who dedicate their time to giving a helping hand.
It's a series we like to call Gold Medal Givers.
When Josh Garrett moved to Bossier, one thing was certain, he wanted to help out.
"I just wanted to show love to our city," said Garrett. "I went to a homeless coalition meeting and introduced myself, and told them I wanted to serve and help."
Garrett then met Paula Williams, the Service Coordinator at Independence Lodge.
It's a permanent housing facility for those with physical disabilities.
"When he said that he wanted to serve, I jumped on that opportunity," said Williams. "We were in need of a group or someone to do a monthly luncheon for the residents."
One day a month, he'd bring food for all to enjoy.
"Here at the Lodge, these people sometimes are forgotten about," said Garrett. "To me, I feel like that's what I'm supposed to do, is help. I love hanging out with people so it's been an awesome time."
Now, almost two years later, it's still a day everyone looks forward to.
"We hang out, make friends, talk about sports, we laugh together, we joke," said Garrett.
Those at the Lodge say Garrett's service helps bring smiles to each of their residents.
"We are blessed to have Josh here. He means the world to us," said Williams. "He brings a lot of joy to the residents. He's just a jovial person and he's great."
However, Garrett says it's the other way around.
"They've become extended family and friends to me," said Garrett. "They usually brighten my day and I'm always left recharged. It's definitely a bright spot in my month."
Which is why this week's Gold Medal Giver is Josh Garrett.
Garrett is involved with the Volunteers of America of North Louisiana.
