Here at NBC 6 News, we like to honor those who dedicate their time to give a helping hand.
This week's Gold Medal Giver is Lynnse Terhune.
Hunched over with hands in the dirt, you'll find Lynnse Terhune, a local high school student with a heart of gold.
"I think she's a beautiful soul," said Senior Pastor Danny Gleason. "She's interested in helping feed those who are hungry."
Lynnse attends the Benton United Methodist Church, but began volunteering there in August after an event called the 30-hour Famine.
"We had a Saturday where the youth came to work," said Terhune. "I saw how many people came in to get food and how many things we prepared. I just, I knew that something more needed to be done because there were so many people that didn't have what we had."
Pastor Gleason knew it was an event that shook her enough to where she was able to do something about it.
Terhune created Stand Up To Hunger, and sells bracelets and t-shirts to help raise money for the church's food pantry.
It's a very creative way to bring awareness to each person and what they can do to make a difference," Gleason said. "I own a bracelet and I look everyday at it. It's not faced outward but inward so it can tell me what I need to do to stand up to hunger."
Lynnse also began a community garden at the church, growing things like tomatoes, onions, and squash.
"Our goal is to grow and produce enough to where we can give lessons to the less fortunate and teach them how to cook with the small things," Terhune said.
The experience so far has been life-changing.
"You really need to appreciate everything because you may not be here tomorrow," Lynnse said.
And those who see her progress hope others will step in to help.
"To know that they can make a difference in the world that they have a heart and passion for making a difference in helping those in need," said Gleason.
Which is why this week's Gold Medal Giver is Lynnse Terhune.
So far, Lynnse has raised more than $3,500 with her t-shirts and bracelets, and hopes to raise more.
