Volunteering is a selfless act that can make a huge difference.

Here at NBC 6 News, we like to honor those who dedicate their time to give a helping hand in the community.

This week, we honor Sharon DeCarlo.

"Sharon is a retired math teacher, and is a very patient person, which it takes a lot of patience to work with animals," said Kristen Powers.

Powers works at Robinson's Rescue and and sees the difference DeCarlo makes at the facility.

"She's volunteered for four years," Powers said. "She dedicates 16 hours per week to do what we do here."

DeCarlo started at the clinic because of her passion for animals.

To this day, she loves every minute.

"Sharon is absolutely making a difference," said Powers. "We couldn't do this without her. We need all hands on deck everyday because of the volume of animals we see here."

Each day, around 30 dogs and cats are spayed or neutered.

DeCarlo does what she can to help, even if it's not the most glamorous of work.

"She does our laundry, she's sterilizing equipment, cleaning kennels," Power described. "She also helps with everything pre and post surgery."

To DeCarlo, it's not about what she's doing, but who she's helping.

"Coming here is stressful for an animal," Powers said. "Sharon does what she can to make sure they're calm and relaxed."

Those at the clinic say she's dedicated, and has a heart of gold.

"She loves animals and it's very evident in the work she does here," Powers said. "I think whatever you're doing, if it serves a passion, then it doesn't matter if you get paid to do it or not. You want to do it because it serves a purpose you believe in. Sharon definitely believes in our purpose and we are grateful for that."

Which is why this week's Gold Medal Giver is Sharon DeCarlo.

Robinson's Rescue is a low cost spay and neuter facility.
