Local law enforcement launches "Summer Heat," an initiative to educate people on the lifesaving benefits of wearing a seatbelt.

They'll also be cracking down on people who choose not to wear one or not to use child restraints.

In Northwest Louisiana alone, there have been 16 fatal crashes since January.

67% of the people killed in those crashes were not wearing a seatbelt.

Sgt. Coordell Williams says, "One of the hardest part of our jobs is giving a death notification to a family as a result of a family member who died or passed away simple because they were not properly restrained inside the vehicle."

Louisiana law requires everyone in a vehicle to wear a seatbelt at all times on Louisiana roadways.
