Alleged cop killer in court

Closed hearing on sealed documents leading up to death-penalty trial

CADDO PARISH, La. - The man charged in the death of a Shreveport Police officer was in court today, but because the hearing involved sealed material, it was closed to the public.

Grover Cannon is charged with first degree murder in the August 5, 2015 death of SPD Officer Thomas LaValley who was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds after responding to a domestic call in the Queensboro area. LaValley was transported to University Health where he was later pronounced dead.

Cannon was identified as the man inside the home when LaValley went to the door and shots were fired. Cannon fled on foot and was able to escape that evening.

A massive manhunt involving local, parish, state and federal law enforcement, and 18 hours later, Cannon was found just a few blocks from where the shooting occurred.

Today’s hearing was one of many that have taken place since his August 6, 2015 arrest, and many more will be held before his trial is held. The Caddo Parish District Attorney’s office plans to seek the death penalty if Cannon is convicted.

Cannon’s next hearing has been scheduled for August 28.
