Shreveport, LA - Today the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority presented 5 people with the 2017 Volunteer Service Award, at their annual Public Luncheon.
The following people have contributed to the community in five different targeted area's:
Educational Enrichment - Eva Dyann Wilson
Global Impact - Dr. Ghali E. Ghali
Family Strengthening - Velma Kirksey - Tarver
Environmental Ownership - Ruby Small
Health Promotion - Andrew Wilson
Journalist and syndicated columnist Roland Martin was the keynote speaker for the luncheon.
He challenged the audience to continue making an impact in the community.
Martin says, "we have significant power when you look at our organizations, hundreds of thousands of members; how are we using those numbers, how are we maximizing, how are we putting pressure to change public policy at a national level, state level, the county level, city level, how are we redefining our neighborhoods and so we have that ability."
This is the 85th year of the South Central Regional Conference.
