BPCC Debate team gearing up for Intercollegiate Debate Tournament

BOSSIER CITY, La. - The BPCC Debate Team will hold the 9th Annual Eddy Shell Invitational Debate Tournament this weekend.

The event will take place Friday, Feb.17 - Sunday, Feb. 19 in Building F on the BPCC campus.

The competition, which will feature more than 200 competitors from 20 colleges/universities, is named in honor of  Dr. Edwin T. “Eddy” Shell, who taught speech at BPCC for forty years until his passing in 2008 after a battle with  cancer.

In its first 8 years, the tournament has attracted 38 different colleges and universities from seven states to the BPCC  campus.

Team co-captain Steve Garcia said, “It’s nice to be able to showcase our campus to many of the colleges and
universities that we see week-in/week out in competitions around the region.”

Debate team coach Bob Alexander added, “This event provides us the chance to both honor the memory of Dr. Shell and provide a unique opportunity for BPCC students, faculty, staff and members of the community to see some of the  top intercollegiate debaters who will ultimately be the leaders of their generation.”

Competition runs from 11:45 a.m.-9:45 p.m. on Friday, 9:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on  Sunday.
