SHREVEPORT, La - Many pay their respects Thursday to the City of Greenwood's first black mayor. Dr. Ernest Lampkins died at the age of 89. His funeral was held Thursday at First United Methodist church.
He was the supervisor of music for Caddo Parish Public Schools and founded the Louisiana School of Professions.
During his lifetime he performed on stage with Duke Ellington and Sammy Davis Jr. He was also a mentor to Grambling State University's Director of Bands, Dr. Larry J. Pannell.
"What lasted me most of all is the musical legacy he instilled in us from an early age and his motto was always, results not excuses."
Lampkins was an Air Force veteran and was buried at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery.
