Councilman continues discussion on city MPC

Shreveport - Shreveport councilman James Flurry is hoping that Shreveport takes it's planning for the future in its own hands.

"There seems to be, for me, we just don't have the urgency from the council to do something," Flurry said.

Currently, the Metropolitan Planning Commission is under the supervision of Caddo Parish. But Flurry would like to see that change.

An MPC for the city of Shreveport would be in charge of economic development and future planning for the business landscape of the Port City. But, MPC Executive Director Mark Sweeney says this would be a mistake.

"The last attempt at trying to do this was under Mayor Hussey's administration back in the 1980's and that did not succeed," Sweeney said. "I think we should continue to have the MPC as an independent objective."

Back in November, Flurry said he planned on the MPC only being around until the end of March.
