East Texas student detained after tip about a possible weapon

TATUM, TX - A student a Tatum High School was detained this morning when he arrived to school following a tip that the student was bringing a weapon to school.

According to a post on the Tatum ISD Facebook page,  school leaders received a tip last night about a student possibly brining a weapon to school on Tuesday. Both principals went to the student's house with Rusk County Sheriff Officers and were allowed to search the home. 

The post says they received another tip that the student was bringing a weapon to school this morning. 

The student arrived at school with his parents and he was detained for questioning in front of the high school.

'The safety and security of our students and staff are top priority. When we receive information about potential risks to student and staff safety, the District takes appropriate action to maintain safety and security.'

The investigation is ongoing.
