Caddo Deputies re-routing traffic around crash scene

CADDO PARISH, La. - Two people are dead and one is at University Health following an early-morning accident on I-49.

At 6:16 a.m. today, Caddo deputies were dispatched to the major traffic accident on the I-49 North overpass at LA Hwy. 173.

Caddo Parish Sheriff's Lt. Mike Gray said a car was traveling northbound in the southbound lane when it collided head-on with an 18-wheeler.

Both the car and cab of the tractor trailer caught fire and were completely consumed by flames. The trailer, which was empty, was partially burned.

Both occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger was ejected from the vehicle, but the driver died inside the vehicle.

The driver of the truck, which is owned by Target Energy, was able to free himself from the cab.

He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to University Health by North Caddo EMS.

The fire was extinguished by Caddo Fire Districts 1 and 7.

Gray advised that there is frozen water on the overpass. The overpass remains closed to traffic until the investigation is concluded and the road is deemed safe.
