Gumbo Cook-off to benefit local medical students outreach trip

Shreveport, La. – Students with LSU Medical School in Shreveport will hold their first gumbo cook-off on Monday, April 3, 2017. The cook-off will be held at Great Raft Brewing at 1251 Dalzell Street in Shreveport from 5pm – 8pm. You must be 21 or older to attend. Tickets are $20 if purchased before the event through SHIP’s Gumbo Cook-off Facebook event’s page, or $25 at the door. All of the money raised will be used to support their yearly medical mission trip to Kenya.

The event is hosted by SHIP-Support for Humanitarianism through Intercontinental Projects, Inc. Each year, a group of students and faculty from LSU Med School Shreveport travel to Kenya to offer medical services to residents in a remote part of the African nation. This year, the group made a trip in February and a second group will depart in April. While in Kenya, the medical students run clinics, while learning how to practice rural medicine. The students pay for their own travel expenses and medical supplies needed to treat the hundreds of patients they see over the course of their month long stay.
