Haughton, LA - After more than two years and $30,000,000, students in Haughton will begin the new school year in a new school building.

With the population growth in Haughton, the district outgrew the old middle school.

Today, community members celebrated the opening of a new middle school with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

State of the art equipment, three floors of classrooms, a brand new gym, and enough space to house 1,500 students.

Students can't wait for classes to begin at the new Haughton middle school.

Daisy Holley eighth grade student at Haughton Middle School says, "it's exciting because it's something new and it's something you can look forward to in the morning..you just have something to look forward to in the morning when you don't feel like coming to school."

Layla Flores, another eighth grade student says, "we have a whole bunch of new space, a lot of room and more activities."

Principal Richard Warren of Haughton Middle School says, "the opportunity to offer more clubs and programs to our students."

The principal says the new space also provides more opportunities for teachers.

Warren says, "at this school we have rooms we can utilize for professional learning communities where we can have teachers plan and collaborate to increase and improve instruction."

Teachers are looking forward to using their new classroom equipment, including Google Chrome books for the students.

Kathryn Davis technology teacher for Haughton Middle says it is, "just amazing to see it all come together we saw the plans from the beginning and the picture of construction so it's really amazing how its all finally here."

Parents say it will make it easier to get their kids back into the swing of things after Summer break.

Louanne Holley parent of Daisy says, "a new school gives the kids a new sense of, um you know, being eager for school because its new, they're so eager to come back."

Students will be able to enjoy the new facility when school starts august second.
