A Desoto Parish homeowner took matters into his own hands Sunday after a man vandalized his car.
Now, one person is dead and the homeowner is behind bars.
Mansfield police say Cody Carl Parker shot and killed James Hewitt after he saw Hewitt vandalizing his vehicle Sunday.
Parker now is charged with second degree murder in the death of Hewitt.
Police were called to the 100 block of Canary Lane after Parker noticed someone outside his home.
Parker approached Hewitt with a rifle and Hewitt tried to flee, but Parker shot him as he ran.
The Mansfield Police called the Desoto Sheriff’s Office to take the lead in the case, due to a conflict of interest involving the suspect and a MPD officer.
"In this particular case, the suspect who done the shooting is related to one of my officers and I didn't want there to be an appearance of controversy or anything like it, so it was just be better for another agency to come in and take the lead on it, " Mansfield Police Chief Gary Hobbs said.
Police say Parker was not in imminent danger during the incident, so it was inappropriate for him to approach Hewitt with a rifle.
Parker has made complaints of vandalism prior to the night of the shooting, police said.
