Joint city meeting focuses on opioids

Arkansas AG: Miller County has fifth highest rate of illicit drug use in youth

TEXARKANA - Tuesday, leaders on both sides of the state line in Texarkana gathered to discuss the opioid crisis.

Officials say prescription drug abuse is the number one cause of accidental death in the United States.  The Arkansas Attorney General's Office added that Miller County has the fifth highest rate of illicit drug use in youth.  Treatment experts, also on hand at the event, agree that the opioid problem is prevalent in the Texarkana area.  Rebecca Liles, LMSW, with Stockton Medical Group said, "We have the I-30 interstate and I-49, so they're getting it here in town, not to mention the prescribers overprescribing or having prescriptions readily available to clients.  It's becoming a really significant problem."

Treatment experts say counseling is of high importance when it comes to combating drug abuse.
