Loyola Flyers gather donations to help hurricane victims

SHREVEPORT, La. - This week, Loyola students and faculty had an opportunity to put their faith in action and help those affected by Hurricane Harvey in southeast Texas.

The Loyola Community has partnered with the Catholic Schools Office of the Archdiocese of Houston-Galveston to help gather gift cards and money which will be distributed to specific schools and families in need.

Stephanie Johnson, Assistant Principal of Academics, says of the effort, “Romans 12:13 encourages us to ‘help the Lord’s people who are in need.’ It has always been a priority for us to join together as the Loyola College Prep community and live out our mission statement to put our faith into action and give to those in need. We are very excited about this opportunity to offer support for those affected by Harvey.”

Loyola students, staff, parents, alumni, faculty, Board of Trustees, and friends of the Loyola community gave financial contributions as well as gift cards in small increments of $20 or $25 to stores like WalMart and Target for the diocese to distribute to families to purchases items like food, clothing, cleaning supplies, etc.

Overall, Loyola has gathered a total of $14,035 in financial contributions and gift cards.

Senior Catherine Anderson says her participation in this effort has made the connection to those suffering more personal for her. “Every day this week, teachers have shown us video footage of the damage, watched interviews of victims with us, and have given us articles to read to ensure that we are made more aware of the extent of the damage and of the need for help. It has helped me recognize the importance of teamwork when those around us suffer.”

Principal Johnny LeBlanc has expressed how proud he is of the “outpouring of love and support from our community. For such a little school to be able to contribute this way speaks volumes about our commitment to living our faith. We continue to pray for the victims of Harvey and now for those in Irma’s path as well.”
