More details in officer-involved shooting released

Officials: suspect had no history with the department

CLARKESVILLE, Tx - The Red River County Sheriff's Office is releasing further details about a fatal shooting outside the department and jail on Friday.

Officials say a deputy approached a vehicle parked outside the sally port when the driver stepped out of the truck with a gun in his hand and refused all commands to put it down.

Clarkesville police responded to the scene to provide backup.  The man, believed to be from the Texarkana area, was not known to the sheriff's department.

Chief Deputy Quintin Wallace said, "At some point in time, the gentleman went back to the vehicle, retrieved another weapon and now he has two weapons, one in each hand.  And, after a few minutes of still trying to get him to drop the weapons, he raised one of the weapons toward the deputy and shots were fired."

Body camera footage and dash cam video of the incident has been turned over to the Texas Rangers. Both officers will be evaluated by a counselor.  The suspect's name is not being released at this time.
