Natchitoches Parish man charged with abusing dogs

NATCHITOCHES, La. - A Natchitoches Parish man accused of abusing nine dogs now sits behind bars.

Alvin Ray Helaire, 27, of Natchez, was taken into custody Tuesday after Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's deputies found several malnourished dogs at a home in the the 100 block of Johnson Loop.

Investigators say nine pit bulls were tied to various locations in the rear of the home without shelter, food or water.

Deputies also discovered broom handles, three pound weights, a sledge hammer, and a large knife where they dogs were being kept.

The Natchitoches Animal Control Unit collected the dogs who ranged in age of 6 months to 1-year-old.  They were transported to a Natchitoches Veterinary Clinic for evaluation.

Deputies say some of the dogs may be possibly stolen.  The dogs were reportedly also being trained for dog fighting purposes.

Helaire was booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center on 9-counts of Cruelty to Animals.
