Opening statements in Deputy City Marshal murder trial

MARKSVILLE, LA - Opening statements begin today in the trial of a Marksville Deputy City Marshal, accused of fatally shooting a six year-old boy.

Derrick Stafford is accused of firing shots into a car during a November 2015 traffic stop.

The shooting killed Jeremy Mardis and injured his father Christopher Few.

Video from a police officer’s body camera shows the father had his hands raised inside the car while Stafford and Norris Greenhouse Jr. fired.

Defense attorneys claim the officers acted in self-defense.

Greenhouse faces a separate trial later this year.
