Shreveport, La - In a two-day effort, the Fuller Center has people taking a leap of faith and coming out of their comfort zone by going over the edge to raise money for a great cause.
Joane Sigler, 85 year old first time rapeller says, "I did something that I thought I would never do."
Those are the words of 85-year old .. Joane Sigler .. after she rappelled 232-feet down the Beck building in downtown Shreveport.
To raise money for the non-profit... Fuller Center for Housing ... In its fundraiser ... Over the Edge for housing.
"I'm 85 years old and i'm a native Shreveporter and I love this town and I'll do anything in the world to make it a better place for everybody to live."
At the end of the day yesterday, more than $95,000 had been raised, and today, 54-people had each raised a thousand dollars or more for the opportunity to rappel down the historic building, meaning they probably will exceed their $120,000 goal.
The Fuller Center builds new homes for low-income families and veterans financed with no-interest mortgages.
Lee Jeter, executive director Fuller Center Housing says, "we got so many people in our community that are working two and three jobs just trying to make ends meet, and they can't afford a decent place to live and that's what our organization does."
Jerry Hodge, minister, University Church of Christ says, "the fact that people would come and do this. For that, i think, shows the passion and compassion that people have."
The brave men and women who went over the edge say they conquered a fear and crossed off another item on their bucket list.
"i was scared to death, i don't like heights i was trying not to look down i was trying to close my eyes and not scream like a little baby," Hodge said.
He wasn't the only one who was scared, but they all say it was all for a great cause.
The fuller center for housing is still taking donations and if you would like to donate you can do so at www.overtheedgenwla.com.
