TEXARKANA, Ar - Just in time for Christmas, religious relics on display in Texarkana. The exposition includes what's believed to be a piece of the cross on which Jesus was crucified.
Tuesday night, hundreds gathered at St. Edwards Catholic Church in hopes of having a holy experience. Among them was Wanda Lewis. She came to "Ask for intercession from some of these relics."
Father Carlos Martins travels North America with the relics, of which there are about a hundred and fifty. He said, "My job is to prepare their faith for an experience of the living God." The relics are objects with a direct association to the saints or the Lord. Martins said, "They're not magical. They don't contain any power of their own, but God likes to work the miraculous in their presence. Why? Because he's awful proud of his saints."
The supreme highlight of the exposition, what is believed to be a piece of the true cross, obtained years ago from a monastery. Martins said, "This has been part of the faith for two millennia, so I'm just continuing that work done by the church. But it is deeply personal to people."
After the presentation, Lewis said,"I felt sadness, and I felt joy, and I wanted to cry at some of the things." The event is the second time Antoinette Riley has seen the relics. She said the experience changed her life. Riley said, "I had been searching for something. I didn't know what I needed to do next and it happened, and it just appeared in my mind and in my heart."
