Protests & meetings continue over the Caddo Parish Confederate Monument

Shreveport, La - The Confederate Monument in front of the Caddo Parish Courthouse draws mixed feelings.

The Caddo Parish Commission has been holding meetings for weeks to gage the publics opinion on whether it should stay, be torn down, or moved to a different location.

A group of pro monument protestors rallied at the Caddo Parish Courthouse, carrying confederate flags, and calling for the Parish to leave the monument where it is.

Red Dukes organized the protest and said  "The monuments were erected to honor those who fight and died. That's what a lot of these monuments are for. And when you tear down these monuments its like you're tearing down a headstone from somebody's grave."

Jermorio Crown and Annette Johnson disagree saying the monument dishonors people living in the here and now. Johnson said  "Shreveport is a melting pot. We have blacks, we have whites, we have hispanics, so for you to have something that only symbolizes one person and oppresses another people through history...you can't grow...no you can't grow."

The Caddo Parish Commission Citizens advisory Committee held their third public forum May 18th at Donnie Bickham Middle School.

Several people came up to the podium to argue for keeping the monument. Many were there to voice their opinion that the monument should be torn down. There were also a couple of people who want the monument moved to a battle site or different location.

The Citizens Advisory Committee will take all the testimony and presentations from their public meetings and make a recommendation to the Caddo Parish Commission but Chairman R.J. Johnson said they are not going to rush the decision.

Johnson said  "We want to make sure this is something that we can stand behind, Caddo Parish can all get behind...so could be the next day. Could be weeks or months from now.... but we're going to take our time and get ir right."

The final public meeting for the CItizen's Advisory Committee is Tuesday May 23, 2017 at 6 pm at Broadmoor Middle School.
