UPDATE: Louisiana granted REAL ID extension

BATON ROUGE - UPDATE: Louisiana has received another extension on the REAL ID compliance. The extension is through October 18. The original deadline was January 22.

Statement from Louisiana OMV:

The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles began issuing Real ID credentials on October 3, 2016, and is awaiting official confirmation from DHS that we are in full compliance. Louisiana has been in continuous contact with DHS, who has confirmed that the determination of compliance has been forwarded to the Secretary for official approval. Although Louisiana is awaiting approval, DHS is in recognition of the coming enforcement deadline therefore has used there delegate authority to immediately grant an extension which will be valid through October 10, 2018. This means Louisiana citizens will still be allowed to use a non-expired Louisiana driver’s license or identification card for domestic air travel even if it has not been marked with a Real ID symbol.

ORIGINAL:

If you are getting on a plane this month, there is an important deadline you need to know about.

Starting January 22, your regular driver’s license will not get you past security.

Travelers will have to have a REAL ID or current passport for international and domestic flights.

You can get a REAL ID at the DMV right now.

All you need is your birth certificate, a social security card, and two utility bills.

Louisiana has requested an extension for the deadline, but it’s still under review.
