Texarkana, AR agency trains families on Alzheimer's Disease

Education Helps Caregivers Cope

Texarkana, AR -  A Texarkana, Arkansas non-profit is educating families on caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's disease.

As our population ages, the disease impacts a greater percentage of people.  Folks at the Center On Aging hold free workshops to help families cope with the disease.  Activities include understanding Alzheimer's, which destroys memory and other mental functions

Registered nurse Stacy Hatfield is also a certified dementia practitioner.  She taught Thursday's workshop. Hatfield said, "They can't do complicated thinking like manipulating or purposely not doing something they were asked to do or told to do, they just can't do that kind of thinking, and so a lot of family members don't understand that."

Healthcare providers urge you to take care of yourself and get rest, if you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease.

The Center On Aging plans to hold a two-day Alzheimer's workshop May 30 and 31st.
