TSU wins first HBCU debate competition

Marshall, TX - The debate was on this past weekend at Wiley College.

The prestigious debate program held the nation's first Historically Black Colleges & Universities speech and debate tournament, with Texas Southern University taking first prize.

"It means a lot to me because we get to share in a camaraderie with each other that we both enjoy and love," said Darryl Garner, a debater from Texas Southern. "It means a lot to me being that Denzel Washington revolutionized the way we see entertainment today and and he's a big figure in that."

But, Washington was not the reason the students convened at Wiley College in the first place.

Speech and debate is something that started so long ago at HBCU's, but it is making a resurgence recently, starting with events at Wiley.

"To be held at Wiley, a place that is filled with history, it's just a great feeling," said TSU debate coach Wendell King. "A great emotion, especially for my students. To see them smile, to see them excited, all of that."
