Construction begins on a $5.5 million low-income senior housing apartment complex.  It’ll be located on South Pointe Parkway behind the Wal-Mart in Shreve City. The building will have 50 one bedroom apartments; 49 are reserved for seniors 62 years old and older. The other is for the apartment complex manager.

Volunteers of America of North Louisiana will manage the building. Its national office secured the funding through the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“This is a dream come true,” said Chuck Meehan, CEO of Volunteers of America of North Louisiana.  “It addresses an urgent need in our community. Our population of senior adults is just exploding and particularly those who have low to moderate incomes."

The VOA has already started a waiting list. Those seeking to live there must meet age and HUD low income guidelines. Pets will be allowed. The rent will be subsidized based on the resident’s income. The apartments are expected to be move-in ready by May 2015. Call  318-221-5000  for more information.
