A Bossier City mailman is recovering, after being attacked by a pit bull.

The attack happened Saturday afternoon in the 800 block of Modica.

The owner of the dog didn't want to go on camera, but says her sister let the dog out of the backyard without a leash.

That's when the 80-pound dog attacked the mailman.

The dog bit him several times.

"He sustained dog bites to his arm, his legs, his face and his ear," said Bossier City Police PIO Mark Natale. "Apparently at some point during the incident, the postal carrier fell to the ground at which time the dog continued to bite him."

The owner says the dog is being put down, and she's sorry for what happened.

She's offered to pay the mailman's hospital bills.
