Michael Ackart, 30, was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with 2nd Degree Murder in connection with a crash that killed Chief Deputy Sheriff Pete Richardson.
Richardson's patrol car was hit by an oncoming car on US Hwy 82 near Lewisville. Both vehicles then crashed into a tractor trailer.
Investigators say Richardson had offered Ackart a ride to a homeless shelter. Ackart who was in the passenger seat allegedly grabbed the steering wheel and caused the accident.
Richardson was pronounced dead at the scene and three others were taken to an area hospital.
Ackart was booked into the Miller Co. Jail and no bond was set. His next court appearance is set for April 4.
