The Miller County Tax Collector was arrested Thursday and charged with theft of property, a Class D Felony.

Special Agents of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division arrested Melissa Barnes, 45, of Texarkana, Ark.

The county collector is the collector of taxes for Miller County and collects municipal, county, school and improvement district taxes. Those funds are then turned over to the county treasurer each month.

Barnes’ arrest  followed an initial investigation that arose from a request submitted by Carlton Jones of the Miller County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Following her arrest, Barnes was transported to the Miller County Detention Center and bond was set at $ 10,000.

It is alleged Barnes stole cash proceeds from the Miller County Tax Collector’s Office.

The State Police investigation is continuing as well as an audit conducted by the Arkansas General Assembly Division of Legislative Auditing.
