The search for a missing DeBerry teen is over. Alicia Benefield,19, had been missing since Mar. 14. Her body was found around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, on Elysian Fields Avenue in Marshall, TX.
“We just found out from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office that they found her body,” said Benefield’s grandfather Joe Benefield. “She had been shot twice and maybe strangled.”
Over three days, more than 200 people looked for her in Waskom, DeBerry, and Elysian Fields. The family said they’re grateful for everyone’s support.
Harrison County deputies said her boyfriend, Rodris Webster, 25, of Elysian Fields, led them to her body. This happened after investigators arrested him around 6 p.m. Tuesday for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
“I’m glad that he came across and let us know where she is,” said Joe Benefield. “My heart is filled with sorrow.”
Family members said his gun was found near the Burger King in Waskom, the same location his muddy sweatshirt and her keys were found Sunday.
He’s been a person of interest since her disappearance. He was questioned for five hours and then released Sunday. He’s now set to be charged with murder.
Friends and family members describe Alicia as quiet, a track star, and a person who didn’t get into fights. Her family said her life started to change eight months ago when she began dating Rodris Webster. They describe their relationship as violent, and said it led to Webster going to jail for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in January. He was released on Mar. 5, when Benefield dropped the charges.
Webster maintained his innocence until Tuesday morning, when he posted “the ultimate and final act is in motion.” Around noon, investigators gave him a polygraph test. Then, around 8 p.m., while investigators were searching a water well in a vacant lot next to his home, he told investigators where they could find his girlfriend. It’s unclear if investigators uncovered any evidence in the well.
