Natchitoches woman arrested for identity theft

Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Detectives have arrested a Natchitoches woman in connection with an Identity Theft Scheme.

Margaret Lanell Self, 39 of the 300 block of Eight Mile Loop, Natchitoches, La., was booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center charged with 7-counts of Felony Identity Theft, 7-counts of Unauthorized Use of an Access Card, and 6-counts of Illegal Transmission of Monetary Funds.

The investigation began on January 24th, when NPSO High Tech Crime Unit Detectives were contacted by a Natchitoches resident reporting recently when he attempted to apply for a financial loan, he discovered that several credit cards had been obtained in his name without his permission.

Detectives learned during the investigation, that the complainant allowed his girlfriend to move in and reside in his residence.

Detectives then focused the investigation on the girlfriend, learning that she allegedly obtained six credit cards in the complainant’s name, and in her name without permission.

Detectives learned while reviewing credit card statements found unauthorized purchases amounting to approximately $30,900 were made by the girlfriend over a four month period.

On February 4th, NPSO Detectives arrested the suspect after reporting to the NPSO Criminal Investigations Division.

Detectives say Self confessed to obtaining the credit cards and unauthorized purchases due to financial problems.

The investigation is continuing.
