President Obama signed an executive order protecting federal workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
The executive order applies to all government facilities as well as federal contractors.
That covers roughly 28 million workers, about one fifth of the U.S. workforce.
Sherry Kircus is part of Shreveport Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, and says "I would never have believed as long ago as when my son came out to me that things would change this much in my lifetime. This is so beautiful. Our Shreveport city ordinance, our fairness ordinance for LGBT people is such a pride, such a joy. "
The order still exempts contractors with religious affiliations. Those contractors can favor workers of their own faith or religious roles.
