Today marks the first day of National Literacy Month and a local mall becomes the backdrop for storytelling--- and a celebration of Doctor Seuss's birthday.

On Saturday families gathered at Pierre Bossier Mall in Bossier City for the annual "Read Across America".

Children had the chance to meet The Cat in the Hat, get a free book, and listen to guest readers.

The event's organizer hope this teaches adults the importance of reading to their children.

In all more than 150 books were given away Saturday.

The Bossier Association of Education has put on the event for more than a decade.
