Jacey Dupree, a sixth grade student at Ashdown Junior High School, created the winning design for the 2014 Komen Texarkana Kids for the Cure t-shirt contest, Christy Walls, committee member for the kids division of the Komen Texarkana Race for the Cure made the announcement.
Jacey’s design was selected from 375 entries for the contest and will now be printed on over 800 t-shirts as the official 2014 Texarkana Kids for the Cure logo. She entered her design idea last spring when she was a fifth grade student in Mrs. Carolyn Henderson's art class and was surprised with an announcement presentation in the AJHS cafeteria on Thursday, Aug. 18, during sixth grade lunch period.
As the design winner, Jacey was presented with the first official t-shirt printed with her design, her original entry framed for hanging, and a prize package of goodies. All of the sixth grade class also enjoyed pink cookies, provided by the school principal Mr. James Jones and his Leadership Team.
Jacey will be invited to share the race platform during the 2014 Komen Texarkana Race for the Cure on October 18 at the Four States Fairgrounds. Last year, more than 7200 participants, including 584 kids, walked, ran, or pushed strollers to raise awareness for finding a cure for breast cancer. This year any child age 2-12 who registers to participate will be given one of the t-shirts with Jacey's design.
Any individual or team who wishes to participate in the Komen Texarkana Race for the Cure may go online at www.komentexarkana.org, click "Komen Race for the Cure" and register. The Texarkana committee for the event will also be set up for registration at Central Mall beginning September 29.
