Barnwell Center supporters have repeatedly tried to save the facility, which has been closed since 2012. No repairs have been made, including a new roof on the conservatory that was promised in the 2011 bond issue.

With no activity in two years, many of the rare tropical plants have died.

"This was a very unique way of the Barnwell combining art and horticulture. The water has been turned off and the plants have died. It's simply unforgivable," supporter Lamar Pugh said.
