bike lane petition
Hundreds of people are pushing for bicycle lanes in the City of Shreveport.
Morgan Johnson started an online petition on Change.org, after her friend, D'Vorious Magee, was hit by a car on march 28th, near corner of East 79th and Thornhill. Magee died the next day.
"I'm very happy that the student started the petition, because something really needs to be done in the different neighborhoods, so another child won't, you know, die like this," says Kerica Magee, D’Vorious’ mother.
While police say Magee ran a stop sign, his mother says the city still needs to seriously considers constructing the lanes to avoid more tragedies.
"I hope this brings all races and neighborhoods together, because I don't want another mother to deal with her 16 year-old baby leaving home and not coming back," says Kerica Magee.
Magee says her son left to go check on some neighborhood yards to be cut, and 15 minutes later her son was dead.
"We don't want anyone else to be dealt the blow that we were dealt," says Stanley Rawls, Kerica Magee’s fiancée.
City councilman for the Cedar Grove area, Joe Shyne, says council members are already considering adding bike lanes.
"We have a lot of people now riding bikes,” says Shyne. “Bike clubs have become very popular."
But the city council is still discussing how to design the bike lanes and which streets will have them.
"We're not looking at putting a bicycle lane on every street that we have, but we are designating some areas where you can ride your bicycle," says Shyne.
While there's no timetable on when the designs will be complete, Shyne urges bike riders to be careful in the meantime.
There's another concern with adding bike lanes as well: money.
Shyne says since the designs aren't complete, city leaders don’t know how much the proposed lanes will cost.
But if it's too expensive, Shyne says the city won't put in the lanes.
